Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: Deuteronomy 6:4 (NKJV)

One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. Ephesians 4:5-6 (KJV)

There was an old hymn I used to sing that said these words ‘God in three persons, blessed trinity.’ This has shaped the thinking of many in the Body of Christ over the years which is why songs should be theologically correct to avoid later confusion. The ‘trinity’ although not a term used in either Testament. has become a way to explain the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as seen in the Bible.

Moses had it right though. God is ONE, not three. One God, not three Gods. More than one God is called polytheism which cultures like the Hindus in India that have approximately three million gods! Christianity is not polytheistic it is monotheistic; meaning one God. So why do we have the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Let’s dig a little deeper.

Before the fall of man, God was one person. Jehovah the self existent One. He said to Moses ‘I AM that I AM,’ meaning ‘I WILL BE what I WILL BE. At the beginning of creation Almighty God was ONE. It is important to note that He is more than Father, Son and Spirit but that is what He turned Himself into to save man because He so loves man.

The whole purpose of God making Himself into Father, Son and Spirit was all for the purpose of redemption. For God to initiate the plan to save man He became FATHER. For God to die for man He became SON. For God to live in man He became SPIRIT. The revelation of this truth should evoke a sense of immense gratitude in your heart to the Lord for His salvation.

We can see that Apostle Paul confirms what Moses spoke to the children of Israel in his letter to the saints in Ephesus. So God was one person in the beginning of creation who remained one but created three personalities from Himself to carry out his purpose which was to bring man back to Himself. Ever since man has been hiding from God, God has been looking for and going after His beloved creation.

Confusion comes in when people read their thoughts and ideas into scripture and arrive at the wrong conclusions. An example of this is when God says in Genesis 1:26 ‘let us make man in our image’… Because Moses, the author of Genesis, used the word ‘us’ it needs to be explained. In short, God was talking to God from the disposition of divine counsel with the mindset of enacting His original plan that He had before the creation began, which was Jesus being the man to be made in the image and likeness of God to save man. Remember Adam was made as a figure or type of Him who was to come (Romans 5:14).

When we look at the Father, Son and Spirit, we see the palpable love of God in action. Look at the amazing lengths He went to, to rescue you and I from destruction and ‘crown us with loving kindness’. This is the story of grace. He loved us as a Father. He sent Jesus to die in our place. He sent His Spirit to come and live with us. He is God alone. God all by Himself. He is the all sufficient One. When you are caught up into the spirit you won’t see three persons on three thrones, there is only one express image of God on one throne, and that throne is in you. The one sitting on it is the resurrected Christ! Listen to what the Bible says about Him.

‘For in Him the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead) continues to dwell in bodily form [giving complete expression of the divine nature].’ Colossians 2:9 (AMPC)

‘And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness (i.e. the Godhead): God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.’ 2 Corinthians 3:16 (KJV)

Hear O Body of Christ, the Lord our God is ONE LORD.

APPLICATION

Avoid getting into teachings that lead you unwittingly down the path to polytheism when the Word of God clearly states that God is One and become aware that the final revelation of God is not Jehovah, it’s JESUS!
