who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, Hebrews 1:3 (NKJV)
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV)
When the book of Hebrews was written, there were no chapters and verses. It was written as one whole letter to a Jewish audience. Why is this important? Because there is usually an introduction, a body of the letter and a climactic conclusion. As the letter builds so do the concepts. Keep this idea in mind.
What we want to understand by the end of this devotion is: what is the the throne of grace and where is the throne of grace?
Let’s define the word throne. ‘Thronos ’ in Greek means kingly power or royalty. It refers to God, the governor of the world. To Christ as God’s administrator. It also means divine power, belonging to Christ.
When it comes to the word ‘seat’ or ‘chair’ it has to do with a position of power. For example, President Trump is in the seat of power in the Republican Party. The Bible tells us we have a joint-sitting from a legal perspective with Christ it doesn’t mean we are all literally sitting down together.
So what are we coming boldly to? I suggest to you that it is our inner consciousness of the grace we have accessed by faith. All of the various aspects of the word throne seem to indicate that this is the case. Why? Because of the One who occupies it.
How can we know that the throne it is not a physical thing? Hebrews 1:3 shows us something amazing. It says Jesus ‘purged our sins’ and then ‘sat down’ on the right hand of the Majesty on high. ‘This is reference to authority. Now most people believe that Jesus did this on the cross. This is simply not true. He spilled his blood on the cross, He sheds his blood in the spirit of man. Let me explain.
For you to be able to house the Holy Spirit who is Jesus without limits, you must first become holy. So everyone who accepts His sacrifice on the cross is cleansed or purged of their sins. We call this being born of the Spirit.
Notice where the ‘throne’ is that Jesus sits down in. Think about it. Where does He purge the believer’s sins? Answer. In their spirit or heart. So where is the right hand of the Majesty on High where Jesus sits down immediately after? In the spirit of the believer.
‘But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.’ Hebrews 10:12-13
Now the ‘sat down’ here is a position of rest and victory. We see this in the prophetic Psalm of David.
Psalm 110:1 says ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”
So we’ve established that the ‘throne of grace’ is not a structure but more of authority power and a consciousness. We’ve also established that this this ‘throne of grace’ is found not up in the sky but in the spirit of the believer.
Lastly I want to direct your attention as to who is ‘seated’ there in the place of authority and power. Jesus and YOU!
'and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus' (Ephesians 2:6)
This is huge! Apostle Paul is telling us that where we are seated with Christ is ‘the heavenlies’ and yet it is in us by His Spirit. So where is heaven? In you. Where is the ‘throne of grace’. In you. Stop looking outwards for Jesus. He’s in YOU!
APPLICATION
Study and meditate on all the scriptures we have touched on in this devotion and realise that you are God’s centre of operations because you are seated in and with Him, and He is enthroned in you.
