ONE SPIRIT WITH HIM

But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit 1 Corinthians 6:17 (KJV)

For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NKJV)

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; Ephesians 4:4 (NIV)

There are so many misconceptions when it comes to the Holy Spirit. Let’s see if we can bring some clarity through the Word of God. Unfortunately some ministers have created another person out of the personality of the Holy Spirit. Surprised? Let’s dig a little deeper and once again let the Bible interpret itself.

Who is the Holy Spirit? The answer may be easier than you think.

In John 14:18 Jesus makes a striking statement ‘I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.’

The word in the Greek is ‘orphanos’ which is orphan in English. The definitions tell us something powerful: comfortless and fatherless.

What did Jesus say about the Holy Spirit? ‘Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.’ (John 14:10)

This was in reference to the Spirit of the Father who lived in the man Christ Jesus.

In Isaiah 9:6 one of the things that Isaiah prophesied that Jesus will be called is everlasting Father. In the original text it just says ‘everlasting’ but the translators reasoned that if there was a Son there must be also a Father.

So the Father was in Jesus by the Spirit and Jesus ‘came to us’ by the same Spirit to father us and comfort us with His words.

In John 14:3 Jesus says ‘and if I go… I will come again…’ in essence, Jesus has come back already in the Holy Spirit. This is truly ingenious and amazing. Think about it. Jesus could not physically live in every believer so He transcended from physical to spiritual to make this a reality. ‘Christ in you the hope of glory’.

Straightaway we can see that there are layers of revelation as to the various expressions of the Holy Spirit.

If you look at all the text verses you will see the phrase ‘one spirit’. Before we can understand this it is important that we realise that the Holy Spirit is not a name of a person but a description of character. That’s why we say ‘the’ Holy Spirit not just Holy Spirit.

This means it can apply to more than just the Father and the Son. When you come into Christ, Jesus spirit and your spirit become ‘one spirit’. No longer two but one. You ready for this? Truth be told, Jesus and you in an inseparable union ARE the Holy Spirit. ‘He that is joined to the Lord is ‘one’ Spirit.’ He is holy, we also are holy.

Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:17 calls it the new creation in Christ. A new creature that never existed before. You and God so mixed together that there is no delineation point . No religious mind can handle this but it’s still true.

John 14:20 gives us a picture of what this all looks like in the Spirit ‘At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.’

What day? The day that Jesus comes to dwell in our hearts by the Spirit. The day of our salvation by grace through faith.

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. (John 14:23)

There is only one Spirit for the believer. It encapsulates the Spirit of the Father, the Spirit of the Son and the Spirit of the new creation in Christ Jesus. No wonder we are ‘theos phusis’ which means associates of the God-kind! 2 Peter 1:4

Jesus said in Matthew 28:20 ‘see I am with you always even until the end of the age’. How could He be with them after His resurrection? Through the indwelling of His Spirit.

APPLICATION

Do a study on John’s list of attributes for the Holy Spirit and see the corresponding statements that Jesus made about Himself that match those exact attributes.
