A Psalm of David. The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” Psalm 110:1 (NKJV)
“For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” Acts 2:34-35 (NKJV)
But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool” Hebrews 1:13
Do you remember in Genesis 1:26 where God says ‘let us make man in our image after our likeness?’ Question: who was He talking to? Was He consulting with the angels in third heaven? No. Why? Because there were no angels up in heaven with God. God is the self-existent One which means He needs no help or assistance from anyone, ever. Besides, angels were created to serve man, not God. Some say that God was talking to other Elohims in some heavenly pantheon of the gods but this is reading too much into the text that simply isn’t there. So who was God speaking to? The only plausible answer is Himself!
This idea is clearly seen when He said to Moses He was Yahweh which means I AM that I AM. This was not a name however but a declaration of sovereignty.
So how did God display His sovereignty? Through the activation of His salvation plan in Christ. The only time God had to make Himself into Father, Son and Spirit was to redeem mankind back to God. Before that He was God Almighty. One God.
When we follow this idea we can understand that the Father was speaking to the Son because God stepped out of God and looked at God. This is mind blowing! When did this occur? Just before the Father sent Jesus into the womb of Mary. The second part of the instruction was ‘sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool’.
The best analogy to describe ‘right hand’ here is Pharaoh and Joseph. In terms of authority, Pharaoh was number one but Joseph was his Prime minister or ‘right hand man’. Pharaoh even said nobody is to lift their hand or foot without Joseph’s permission. Joseph had total authority second only to Pharaoh in all the Egyptian Empire. This gives us a picture of the Father saying to Jesus, sit at my right hand, my place of absolute power. You know where that place actually is? In the new creation by His Spirit. This is why it says in 1 Corinthians 15:25
‘For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.’
How is He reigning now? Through His church by Christ in us.
The next part of the statement says ‘Till I make Your enemies your footstool.’ Now enemies here does not mean other human beings. It’s talking about Satan and his demons. The Bible says ‘we don’t wrestle against flesh and blood’ and our fight is ‘the good fight of faith’.
He makes our enemies our footstool. Question: what is a footstool for? Putting your feet on. So where is Satan and his demons? Under the believer’s feet!
And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, Ephesians 1:22
In case you are wondering; His feet refers to the Body of Christ i.e. the church. So whose feet is Satan under? The feet of every believer!
Rewind now back to Genesis 1:26. Who was the man, made in the image and likeness of God? The one who eventually stepped out of God. The man Christ Jesus. ‘Let Us’ is referring to the Godhead which is the Father and the Son. 1 John 1:3b states ‘Our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ’. ‘Let them’ in Genesis 1:27 is talking about Adam and Eve or mankind having dominion presented to them but we see ‘all things put under Jesus’ feet’ which are now ours in Christ.
